Unit 3982
Category: layer dug in 1999
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: hearth,oven structure
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: feature; Description: hearth; Material: pise-like; Deposition: homogeneous
Dimensions: 0.67m north-south x 0.44m east-west x 0.09m thick
Discussion: Clay-built structure of oven feature F293. Appears to be an homogenous structure with no differentiation between walls and floors, unlike F269, where the floor is differentiated by more intense burning. Quite heavily truncated and originally hidden by sample baulk. Possibly originally a domed structure though only the lowest 9cm survived. Abutts F269 and may be a later addition to this feature.
Recognition: Clear hard circular raised structure, dark brown in colour
Definition: Clear edges abutting F269 and above ashy deposit
Execution: Trowel
Condition: Slightly moist, cracking and deteriorating where dry
Consistency: Firm
Colour: Dark brown where moist
Texture: Silty clay
Bedding: Massive
Inclusions: Abundant phytoliths, occasional bone, frequent charcoal flecks
Post-depositional Features: None apparent
Basal Boundary: Sharp, smooth, anthropic
