Discussion: Wall or superstructure of oven F269. built of compacted homogenised clay and scorched surfaces. It is built over cut 4113 *see sketch on unit sheet) which forms the base of the oven. Although standing to a height of up to 23 cm, the structure is probably all that survives of a much taller, possibly domed structure which was levelled following abandonment, prior to infilling of space 117 

 

Recognition: Clear hardened open ended oval structure 

Definition: Clearly differentiated from neighbouring units as harder - different colour and showing signs of scorching. 

Execution: Trowel 

Condition: Dry, becoming moister with depth, cracking and slightly damaged at top 

Consistency: firm 

Colour: Reddish Brown where scorched, otherwise dark brown 

Texture: Silty Clay 

Bedding: Massive 

Inclusions: Moderate charcoal flecks, occational bone fragments 

Post-depositional Features: occational root and insect holes 

Basal Boundary: Clear smooth anthropic

Unit description: Part of an oven wall from Building 2. Flot sample 2324 This is a very small unit, but with uniform light brown colour and no burning. Generally small pieces all within 2 or 3 cm range, but with articulated first and second Bos phalanges. The heavy residue is very clean, with no apparent mixing. Not floor like at all, more like oven packing/sealed fill. Last Number = F.10
