Unit 3998
Category: layer dug in 1999
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: oven fill
Data Category Information: Location: feature; Description: hearth; Material: occupation; Deposition: multiple
Dimensions: 0.76m north-south x 0.58m east west x 0.12m thick
Discussion: Layer of quite friable material underlying floor 3989 of oven F269 and overlying base of oven superstructure 4108. The northern part of the unit near the entrance to F269 is slightly burnt but the remainder appears unburnt and seems to have been a make-up layer in the base of the feature rather than having a function during the oven use. It seems to have served its main purpose as a means to raise the level of the oven floor, possibly because the feature initially served a non-oven purpose (see cut sheet 4113).
Recognition: Slightly loose, mainly unburnt deposit below 3989 and contained within F 269
Definition: Clearly contained within F269
Execution: Trowel
Condition: Mainly dry, loosely compacted, not truncated
Consistency: Friable
Colour: Mid greyish brown
Texture: Silty clay
Bedding: Massive
Inclusions: Occasional pot fragments
Post-depositional Features: Occasional root and insect holes
Basal Boundary: Clear, smooth, anthropic
