Unit 4140
Category: layer dug in 1999
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: wall plaster
Data Category Information: Description: 60's
Dimensions: 0.6 x 0.2 x 0.04 m
Discussion: Wall plaster found below (4122) feature 410. Wall collapsed from the east falling ntact face down, hence plaster face below bricks and mortar. Covers an irregular area and probably shattered on impact, though (4122) retained its form with little impact movement.
Plaster up to 4cm thick with odd traces of red and black paint, but nothing contiguous and nothing retrievable. Plaster consists of laminations of pale grey brown mud undercoat with lime plaster wash. See sample 3 for plaster count.
Plaster probably continues below (4123) which would indicate a continuous plaster face through two phases of wall
Recognition: off white laminated below collapsed wall
Definition: easily recognisable limits of plaster to surrounding deposits
Execution: trowel
Condition: heavily root disturbed due to overnight exposure, dew and recent rain
