Unit 4170
Category: layer dug in 1999
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: fill, post - hole fill
Data Category Information: Location: cut; Description: posthole; Deposition: homogeneous; Basal Spit: basal deposit
Dimensions: 0.84 x 0.60 x 0.18 m
Discussion: Backfill of posthole, possibly post retrieval stage. However, from the remenants of the post survived from Mellaart's excavation it would appear that the pillar was contructed of brick an d mortar and plastered, which would mean no post was involved; therefore this would be consructonal fill. It is also quite possible that Mellaart dug this and that we have excavated his backfill. The backfill appeared to be a single deposition event with the homogenous fill.

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.

Unit description: This unit is from the post retrieval pit on the east wall of Building 6. It is at the transitional point between Mellaart's backfill and the undisturbed neolithic deposits. Dry sieve material: The composition of the bones and their condition suggests that this material is Mellaart's backfill. Flot sample no 2 (>4mm 100% sorted and recorded) is small with mostly scrap. Pieces are both cattle-sized (long bone frags and indeterminates) and sheep-sized (long bone fragments, ribs, tooth fragments and indeterminates). There are only two diagnostics - a sheep/goat distal tibia and a sheep-sized sesamoid. Fragmentation is high with most pieces being 1or 2 cms in length; the condition is fair, but edges are often a bit battered as if the material has been moved/rolled; about 5% is burnt (mostly low temperatures but some grey/white suggesting higher). In general, the material seems like fill as it is seems to have mixed derivations and is quite broken up.
