Unit 4508
Category: layer dug in 1999
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: Fill of crawlhole F.530
Data Category Information: Location: building; Deposition: homogeneous
Dimensions: 0.58e-w x 0.32 x 0.47m depth
Discussion: 4508 was fill within crawlhole F.530 - 4509. It was a multi-coloured and multi-textured deposit. Mainly light to mid. brown clayey silts, but with moderate lumps of off-white plaster, brick material, and lensing of pale brown fine sandy silts. Although firmly compacted, it was clearly distinguishable from infill 4477 immediately to the north of the crawlhole, which had a stronger compaction. However, it may be that this was just a difference caused by drying out around the exposed south face of wall F.482, so there's a high probability that 4508 is the same as 4477 - a very similar deposit.
Consistency: Firm.
Colour: Light to mid. browns / Light to dark grays / Off-white plaster / Orangey-light to mid. browns.
Texture: Clayey silts (clay content varies considerably - e.g. Lt. to mid. brown clayey silt -clay 5-10%, fine silt 90-95%. Mid. to dark gray, 'bricky', clayey silt -clay 30-50%.) Fine to med. sandy -silts.
Bedding: Massive.
Inclusions: Occ. to mod. charcoal fl. < 2%. Occ. v. small, white siliceous plant remains < 1%. Occ. small to med. bone < 2%. V. occ., small, shell, stone and obsidian.
Post-depositional Features: Partly truncated in upper area on the south face, probably due to collapse, or natural erosion.
Basal Boundary: Constructional, v. sharp to abrupt, prominent to distinct, smooth to wavy.
