Unit 4614
Category: layer dug in 1999
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: burial fill
Data Category Information: Location: cut; Description: burial; Deposition: homogeneous
Dimensions: 0.86m (N-S) by 0.60m (E-W)
Discussion: Upper fill of grave feature 513. Appears to be a higher than normal concentration of burnt cereals and tubers within deposit. A sample of (30 litres) next to the grave cut will be taken to check if this is normal to infill of building or that they have been placed within the grave fill. At least two other bones from another possible skeleton has been found, one in sieving and one on site while excavating infill. Awaiting results.
Recognition: Finer deposits within bulky neolithic infill 4416.
Definition: Sub-circular definition to fill difference
Execution: excavated in plan
Condition: good
Consistency: Friable
Colour: Greyish brown
Texture: Clayey silt
Bedding: Massive
Inclusions: Charcoal <1%, grit, plaster bits

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.

Unit description: Flot sample 1706 - completely analyzed Also some handpicked material The upper fill from burial F.513. There is a high density of bone in this flot sample including a few canid bones, most of a weasel and a very large number of rodent bones, mainly mouse and a few shrew. There is also a small number of sheep/goat bones. In addition to the few bones that can positively be identified to canid there are a number of small to medium size bones including what was a complete scapula, and complete lumbar and thoracic vertebra which may be from the same animal. Apparently a cluster of medium sized bones were handpicked by the excavator but were broken/dissolved before reaching the bone lab. These disarticulated dog bones are likely to be the same as those in 4416 (needs checking), and a likely scenario is that the animal was in the fill of 4416, and disturbed when the burial was cut in, so that several bones ended up back filled into the burial fill. The weasel skeleton appears almost complete, and seems securely associated with the burial fill. Overall the colour is dark brown to black and there is a fair amount of burning at high and low temperatures. Fragment size is larger than normal although this may be due to the very low percentage of modern breaks and to the puppy bones. Apart from the two skeletons mentioned above, the colour and fragmentation is similar to the flot sample taken from the general surrounding fill 4416. 4mm flotation sample 3, 100% sorted, was recorded for diagnostics only at a later date.
