Unit 4735
Category: layer dug in 1999
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: oven base
Data Category Information: Location: feature; Description: hearth; Material: baked; Deposition: single
Dimensions: 0.44m diameter; appprox. 0.03m - 0.05m thick
Discussion: - fairly typical of oven base material in appearance - colour and texture - although not quite sure how typical it is to have rim around edge otherwise flat but inclined west to east. Base not baked as hard as other oven bases I've excavated or seen. Discernable crust but easy to excavate. Originally same as unfired light brown clayey? material below ? (4736). Maybe hearth rather than oven - poss. different in some way to other ovens ( this located in middle of room ).No evidence left in situ of oven superstructure.
Recognition: dark brown rim of material visible after removal of Mellart backfill - characteristic of oven
Definition: clear
Execution: trowel
Condition: damp
Consistency: friable
Colour: light to mid (slightly orangy) brown on surface; dark brown below
Texture: silt - small sand fraction
Bedding: massive - except crust formed at top
