Unit 4801
Category: layer dug in 1999
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: Fire installation base
Data Category Information: Location: feature; Description: hearth; Material: baked; Deposition: composite (floor/bedding/plaster/packing/occupation)
Dimensions: 0.60m (E-W) x 0.55m + (N-S) x 0.02m deep
Discussion: Base of fire installation F502 with extremely hard, burnt surface, becoming softer and less burnt with depth. Described as compound layered, but the apparently differing layers were probably the result of differential heating, and more likely therefore to be massive. May have formed a single structure with the superstructure, but again, differential heating suggested different elements.
Recognition: Base in fire installation
