Unit 4904
Category: layer dug in 1999
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: Fire installation fill
Data Category Information: Location: feature; Description: hearth; Material: occupation; Deposition: multiple
Dimensions: 0.76m (E-W) x 0.78m + (N-S) x 0.10m thick
Discussion: Multi-layered burnt, ashy lower fill of fire installation F523, lying below the hardened base (4901) and therefore indicative of an earlier phase of use of the feature, though does not appear to lie on an earlier hardened base, merely overlying a lower unburnt clay deposit, which appears to have been partly cut into as a first phase of feature construction.
Recognition: Burnt layer below fire installation base in F523
Definition: Confined within the remaining fire installation feature and bounded by unburnt deposits
Execution: Trowel from edges
Condition: Dry, burnt and friable
Consistency: Friable
Colour: Dark brown, light brown and orange
Texture: Silty clay loam
Bedding: Compound layered
Inclusions: <5% medium clay ball fragments
Post-depositional Features: Occasional root disturbance
Basal Boundary: Clear, smooth, anthropic
