Unit 4906
Category: Cut dug in 1999
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: Fire installation cut
Data Category Information: Description: hearth
Dimensions: 0.76m (E-W) x 0.81m + (N-S) x 0.13m deep
Discussion: Oval to rectangular cut for fire installation F523, cut into underlying deposits (probably infill) and respecting the west wall of Space 173. Also appears to partly cut the fire installation superstructure (4908), suggesting two early phases of feature structure/use. These were probably the initial phases of a long continuum of feature use which continued with the later phases of use of F523 and then F502
Cut 4906 was filled with a number of burnt ashy layers (4904) and capped with a hard surface which must have represented a later base. The base of the cut showed some burning, which must have related to the earliest heating phase and burning of the ashy deposits.
Recognition: Curving cut through unburnt deposits, containing burnt deposits
Definition: Clear boundary between different deposits
Execution: Trowel from edges
Condition: Possibly some truncation
Shape: Oval to sub-rectangular
Sides: Concave
Base Break: Gradual
Base: Mostly flat
Orientation: North-South
