Discussion: 4999 was a roughly pear-shaped cut which lay beneath the ashy deposit 4986 and bone cluster 4993 above the floor surface 5090 in the south east corner of building 23/ space178. Although there was clearly a depression beneath deposits 4993 and 4986, its status as a cut was not always clear. To the west, the hollow was clearly cut through floor layers. To the east, the cut was less distinct and its form followed that of the bones of cluster 4993 which it underlay. A slight cut may have been made to accommodate the bulk of these deposits beneath the later floor layers. However, part of the depression was probably caused by the compaction of the bones into the deposits beneath them.
