Discussion: 5090 was a silty clay, orange floor surface which lay in patches over earlier 'dirty' (4987) and 'clean' (4988) floor deposits and make-up layers in the south east corner of building 23/ space 178. Because it was emphemoral and insubstantial, it was excavated in two parts with the repective underlying floor deposts 4987 and 4988. No separate samples were taken for the floor surface itself. However, it was given a separate number after excavation to establish its distinction from the earlier segregated floor deposits and to clarify its position in the matrix.
