Discussion: 5084 was the remains of crumbly orange-brown floor surface that was cut by oven F 540. It is possible that it extended further to the east but it was too badly truncated/ worn to be certain of this. The survival of the deposit in the area to the west of F 540 suggests that (like 5083) it may represent the earliest definition of 'dirty' and 'clean' areas (to the east and west respectively) in the southern half of building 23/ space 178. If the eastern edge of this deposit marked the eastern edge of the 'clean' edge at this time, this could explain why the floor surface survived in this area, but was severaly truncated to the east where a variety pf productive activities appear to have taken place (according to the overlying deposits).
