Discussion: [5188] was the base of oven F555 which was probably associated with its middle phase of use. Its surface was not hardened like the oven base overling it (5159), but it was a distinctly different layer to this later oven base and was heavily scorched. It may be that its baked surface was removed to accomodate the addiion of the later oven box. 

Consistency: friable 

Colour: yellow + orangeish brown where scorched from oven base; greyish-brown elsewhere 

Texture: silty clay 

Bedding: massive 

Inclusions: 5% charcoal flecks, 2% clay flecks, occasional flecks of stone, plaster + phytoliths 

Post-depositional Features: salt encrustation 

Basal Boundary: sharp / smooth / distinct
