Discussion: [5197 was a lrge foundation deposit which underlay the entire upper structure of oven F.555. Its south-eastern extent was difficult to distinguish from the truncated oven base above it and may have been removed along with the upper layer [5188]. in places. It provided a foundation for the earliest oven superstructure and probably the base for the earliest phase of use of the oven. Although clay baked layer on its upper surface, must have been removed when the later oven bases were laid.

Inclusions: 10% plaster, 2% charcoal, 2% phytoliths, occasional tiny pebbles
