Unit 5246
Category: layer dug in 1999
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: plaster floor
Data Category Information: Location: building; Description: general; Material: white clay; Deposition: single
Dimensions: 1.0 x 0.8 in NE as exposed 0.4 x 0.35 to SW
Discussion: Large bone (X1) overlay phytolith mat/basket 'impression' which in turn overlay a stone (X2). The phytolith mat partially resting on the floor (or just a few millimetres off) on its side - about 2cm above the plaster floor (5246) on its E side - just lipping over the stone. The bone about a cm above the phytpolith with the soil of 5215? in between. Decided to call bone an X find of 5246 though as these objects seem to be associated [RT 16/09/99].
When lifted stone (X2) found what looks to be a red ochre stain underneath with what looks like thin plaster + phytolith frags - The underside of the stone appears to be stained with red ochre (RT 16/9).
for discussion of 5246 see 5245 unit sheet.
Recognition: 'sticky' plaster floor in NE corner of 182. May actually be contemporary with 5245 but in texture resembles a surface found to underlie 5245 in the centre of the room
