Unit 5245
Category: layer dug in 1999
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: floor
Data Category Information: Location: building; Description: general; Material: occupation; Deposition: multiple
Discussion: Plaster surface in N half of sp.182. Generally dry. gritty deposit in contrast to 'sticky' 5246. The surface becomes more mixed and harder to follow to the SE but the presence of a floor is suggested by the entirely flattened sheep horn at c. 919.5 / 970.75 / 1003.27 (no X find because not lifted).
5246 is a clayey plaster deposit with a much stickier feel. Two patches are present, provisionally given the same number. That is the NE corner lies directly below 5241; the interface with 5245 remains to be properly defined. That to the SW of 5245 clearly underlies the latter - its extent will become clear on removal of 5245 but it too appears to be absent from the W side of the space in the centre of the room.
NB the only finds + sample numbered as 5246 in 1999 came from the NE corner of sp182 (see 5346).
Recognition: solid plaster surface below mixed occupation deposit 5240 + extending to S below 5242. It may continue beneath 5239 but this was not excavated.
