Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.

Unit description: A relatively small amount of bone was recovered from the 20 litre flotation sample and there was no material from the dry sieve. Therefore, flotation sample #2, 4mm, 100% sorted, was completely recorded. There is a reasonable quantity of sheep-sized long bone fragments. Only a couple of bone fragments from larger mammalst were amongst the matrial. Ribs from animals of sheep size are also well represented and the rest of the unit is made up of vertebral fragments and odd other skeletal element. There are no remains from either fish or bird. About 80-90% of the assemblage shows evidence of burning, approximately 60% is charred black and the rest of the burnt bone had been exposed to a high enough temperature for a long enough period to have become calcined and turned white in colour. The bone tends not to show signs of significant amounts of weathering. The fauna from this unit is heavily fragmented. Although there is no gnawed bone, there is, however, a significant amount of digested bone. Both burnt and unburnt digested bone are present. One explanation could be that dogs were in the area before and after the burning episode(s) had taken place. It is possible that the bone was heavily processed, much of the unidentifiable material consists of small fragments of spongy bone that may be consistent with the extraction of grease. Another possibility is that it is just residual bone that became heavily trampled and this is more probable considering the small amount of material in the sample.
