Unit 5329
Category: layer dug in 1999
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: alluvium,dump
Data Category Information: Location: external; Deposition: alluviated dumps
Dimensions: 4.2m+ w-e, 1.2m+ n-s, average 0.15m thick
Description: Same as (5324) except artefactual inclusions much less frequent
Discussion: Alluvium with cultural material, same as (5324) to (5328) above but with much less cultural material. Could imply that dumping was less intense or alluviation more rapid.

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.

Unit description: The unit was dug in two parts several weeks apart. The two parts were analyzed separately, but the FUD remains accurate. The layer immediately above the marl. A mix of alluvial and cultural deposits. The unit is generally an orangey brown with no burning and a small amount of carnivore gnawing. Fragment size is large, much larger than any unit on site and closer to the Kopal units. This may not be apparent in the statistics since most breaks are modern. At the same time the number of elements represented is much smaller than most units on site. Taxa represented are caprines, equids, cattle, deer, dog and human. There are approximately equal amounts of large and medium size animal scrap fragments. Element distribution includes axial skeleton, long bones and a few teeth and cranial fragments teeth. There are no foot bones. There were a few bird bones which were partially ided and pulled for further study. Sample 5 >4mm flotation 100% sorted, recorded completely. Several tiny bits (none over 1 cm) of sheep-size scrap. One burnt. Although highly fragmented, not weathered or rolled. Looks like clean floor in low traffic area. Sample 2 >4mm flotation 100% sorted, recorded only as flot frags (no diagnostics). It is smallish with mostly fairly small pieces but not tiny crumbles, and with generally good surface condition (not rolled or trampled). Very little burning, little or no digestion. There is a little fish and microfauna (probably amphibian). Sample 3 >4mm flotation 100% sorted, recorded only as flot frags (no diagnostics or other materials). It is a fairly small sample, but with a lot of largish pieces (3-5 cm) and a fair bit of large mammal. Surface condition is generally good, with only a little low temperature burning. A bit of gnawing, little digestion. Further dry sieve material that came in late was recorded in 2000 and fits with the FUD described above with large fragment size, no burning and a wide range of taxa including caprine, cattle, red deer and dog.
