Unit 5400
Category: Layer dug in 2002
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: floor
Data Category Information: Location: building; Description: general; Material: dark grey clay; Deposition: composite (floors/bedding/plaster/packing/occupation); Basal Spit: unpainted
Discussion: Removal of plaster 5396 came down to possible plaster surface in E part of space (the are close to the oven Wall never produced a clear surface - infill/make up recorded as 5398). 5400 was discontinuous however and included area without plaster, notibly in SE where 5396 nevertheless came to a clear level horizon that appeared to be an earlier surface instead. Removing 5400 lrevealed a typical plaster surface and thick greyish make up coming off briown deposit below (5408). To the south however the bricky deposit and some of the plaster came off a second plaster surface. This was termed 5401 but may in fact be eqivelent to what I called 5400 to the N.
Recognition: more coherent but discontinuous plaster surface below lumpy deposit 5396
