Unit 6102

Category: layer    dug in 1999

Area: North

Interpretive Categories: floor and packing

Data Category Information: none

Dimensions: 1*1.2m

Discussion: Began digging in the eastern area near the bulk where the upper floor had been demaged and lower floor was visible. I tried to follow this lower floor and found that in the south area the upper floors popped off easily and there was a layer of thick salts covering the lower floors. There were several stones? or burnt clay bits to the north of the salt area and there seemed to be a burnt layer in the center of the unit (possibly a fire installation?). The floors in this area are badly demaged (crashed and broken) especially in the north of the unit and are very difficult to folow. They are also very hard and compact with a different fill and consistency from those in the diagonal north-east corner (those on beneth/platform)(3595) which I dug just previous to this unit.

Recognition: Directly above was another floor - partly demaged so could be seen in section

Definition: North and West border defined by grid - South by baulk and East by platforme edge

Execution: trowel and leaf trowel first by popping pieces than by scraping floor by floor

Condition: fairly moist and sticky

Consistency: hard and compact

Colour: 10 YR 7/2-6/3 light gray/ pale brown

Texture: clay 70-80 % silt 30-20%

Bedding: compound layers-layers of variable thickness which does not continue across the entire unit.

Inclusions: none outstanding, seems all clean fill/packing.

Post-depositional Features: layer of salts

Basal Boundary: lower floor type: anthropogenic distinctiness, very sharp contrast: distinct form: wavy slope down to south surface: uneven, burning in some areas, salts in some areas.

Unit description: Sample 2 >4 mm flotation 100% sorted, recorded completely. Small unit, fairly fragmented, but with pieces up to ca. 3 cm. Most is not very weathered. A little burning, no digestion. All sheep-size except for one piece of antler and one microfauna fragment. No integrity. Doesn't look trampled, nor like clean floor. Resembles oven rake-out: looks more like what has been swept up than what is left behind after sweeping. Maybe a dirty, low-traffic area? Last number = 15
