Unit 7248

Category: Layer    dug in 2001

Area: Trench I

Interpretive Categories: burnt ash lens, part of pit fill

Data Category Information: none

Dimensions: 1.5m x 1.3m x 0.05-0.1m (deeper in centre)

Description: burnt ash lens, part of pit fill

Discussion: Incredibly light and intensively burnt layered ashy deposit - possible that each ash lens relates to a separate episode of burning activity - in which case there may be as many as twelve separate episodes of burning activity. This lens sits within pit (7218).

Recognition: recognised as much darker and ashier than surrounding pit fill of our pit (7218)

Definition: defined as an intense area of burning - associated with several episodes of bonfire/burning activities

Execution: trowel

Condition: hot dry sunny and no wind

Consistency: very hard and solidified on surface but softer underneath

Colour: variegated - owing to severe episodes of burning. Goes to blackish grey to bright orange to creamy white (impossible to Munsell all colours)

Texture: fine ashy silt with occasional clayish lumps - heterogeneous

Bedding: layered

Inclusions: frequent flecks of charcoal (up to 5mm diameter). Moderate chunks of burnt clay or fired clat. Occasional sherds of pottery - only a few (4) pieces of tiles. Rare obsidian,

Post-depositional Features: roots - few

Basal Boundary: clear anthropogenic - comes to a hard compact surface - but this is not the surface (7244) since the deposit (7248) sits within the pit.
