Description: Defined as arbitrary spit below (7247)

Discussion: This layer was taken as an arbitrary spit to define / expose the full depth of the pit with cut (7218). As we started to mattock we realise that is was not simply pit fill that we had been removing. We came on to a clean surface that appeared at first to be a mudbrick wall running E-W through the trench… Then we hit a large ring (?unclear word on form) of stone in the NE half of the trench, so we stopped and cleaned up on that level. We removed 10-20cm of soil right across the pit so to define the structure lying beneath. We came to the rather destroyed remains of a grave with tile and concrete lining and ther red plaster paint. What we originally though was a mudbrick wall is in fact the grave cut on the N side, and we also determined one on the S side. These seem to cut probable chalcolithic layers hence giving the appearance of mudbrick. All of the concrete, tile and limestone removed in the upper pit fills are related to the robbing or accidental disturbance of this grave by subsequent pit activity. The femur in the N grave cur section may be part od the body once interred within the grave/tomb.
