Unit 7962
Category: layer dug in 2004
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: room fill,wall baulk
Data Category Information: Description: baulks
Discussion: This unit was begun to clean up some remaining wall baulk on the eastern south wall and remove some arbitrary left dirt jutting out on the surface defined by units 7953 and 7949. In removing this layer, an alcove or recess (plastered on top) was found in the wall where before it had seemed that the wall plaster was missing. The floor surface continued into the recess defining its bottom. The recess is approx. the thickness of the wall but it was not clear if it extended into the bricks of the second wall of the building to the south. The floor was not burnt so it is unlikely that this alcove was an oven as Ian wanted it to be. Building 48 to the east had an oven alcove similarly placed in the SE wall. There were charcoal bits stuck in the plaster on the roof of the alcove, helping us to defne the extent of the alcove.
Thickness of unit estimated in PX (DE 18/07/09).
