Unit 7966
Category: Layer dug in 2004
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: bin wall, partition wall, wall fall
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: feature; Description: bin; Material: pise-like; Deposition: homogeneous
Discussion: This unit consists of a rough-sufaces plaster block to the west of the bin in feauture 1652. It was first believed that the block was the west wall of the bin. However, the construction of the block is different than that of 7963, 7964, or even 7965. 7963 and 7964 are smooth and thin, 7965 is lined with mudbrick and is very regular. 7966 is all plaster, is thick and the lines are rough block-like. The souther end of 7966 is cut by 7964, and 7966 may continue on below 7964. Therefore, it is interpreted that 7966 was of an earlier phase than 7963 or 7964. It was perhaps the wall of an earlier bin that was replaced by this later bin. As well, the northern end of 7966 is cut by 7965, and a portion of the remaining northern end was hollowed out, and a mudbrick, similar to those found in 7965 was placed insie 7966.
The plaster in 7966 only extends down for 10 cm. The floor of 7960, which abutts 7966, is another 6 cm down from where the plaster ends. The profile that is revealed (unit 7967) shows a straited set of possible unplastered surfaces. Due to its rough nature and close proximity to the wall, it is also possible that 7966 is a piece of wall fall. However, its north-south alignment make this unlikely.
Recognition: rough plaster block and possible bin wall
Definition: plaster partition wall on western edge of bin in feature 1652.
