Unit 8987
Category: layer dug in 2004
Area: TP
Interpretive Categories: mudbrick wall
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: wall/blocking; Material: brick
Discussion: It is a mubrick wall situated in N part of an extension and oriented E-W. It consisted of 2 layers of mudbricks - in each layer there were 4 bricks but in each layer the brick that was in the W end was seriously damaged - so there were halves of bricks indeed.
The upper layer was very damaged - the bricks differed in heights from 8 to 2cm while in the lower layer they all had the heights of 12cm however they differed in other dimensions. The biggest brick of lower layer (the one on E end) had dimensions of 30 x 42cm while the others were damaged on their edges by different cuts so they were shorter in width.
The first 2 bricks from the E side were placed on the stony basement however the first one was also partly placed (in its N part) on a layer of burnt. The W part of the wall 8987 had other kind of basal boundary - it was lighter than bricks of wall 8987 and it is probably also a wall. It is a structure visible in a N section of a pit which infill was registered as unit 7825.
The wall 8987 was built very well, the mortar was well prepared and it was clearly visible between the bricks.
Because both walls 6952 and 8987 were placed on the same stony basement they were classified as 'same as'. They were older than the wall 7840 but younger than the wall 10924 - all of which were in the same area.
The wall 8987 was also older than a mating (unit 8984) because it was backing against this wall (as well as walls 6952 and 7830). The mating was also lying on the floor (unit 8986) which was placed between the walls and on which there were situated some stones similar to those constructing the basement of walls 8987 and 6952.
The wall 8987 was also older than the wall 10904 which is on N side of wall 8987 and was attached to it and slightly over it - it was backing against 8987.
