This is large pit, probably late Roman/early Byzantine in date located in SW corner of the main trench and in SE part of the extension. As a result the put was excavate in two reasons - 2001 a 2004. Stratigraphic position of the pit is indicated by its relation to the burnt layer which has been dated to late Roman period. The pit cuts this distinctive layer. Upper part of its infill in the western section contains relatively large amount of burnt soil asociated with the fire - formed layer mentional above. Exact layout of the pit in its eastern part at this level was not recorded in the 2001 season (unit 6992). The subsequent layers in the put were destingnished to some degree arbitrarly based upon its context and consistency. Accoringly, the lowest level of infill was slightly layered, which may indicate it is to be associated its use. However a half of a stump seal probably Neolithic in date was found there. The pit was probably used for storage. |
