Unit 10019
Category: skeleton dug in 2004
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: Dead body
Data Category Information: none
Discussion: The burial was 1st discovered with te exposure of the right side of the skull. The grave cut (10020) and the grave fill (10018) were clearly defined. The body was orientated W-E and was placed in a dorsally extended position. This is a late Roman/Byzantine burial. The individual was large and robust, the articulated left hand was particulary well defined and large. Preliminary sexing by the pelvis indiacted that this is a male. The left hand phalanges rested on a pottery fragment which may have been intentionally placed under the hand. The pottery fragment may also be from the grave fill only. The cranium, especially the face is highly fragmented and even missing bones in several areas. Animal disturbance was evident throughout the unit and accounts for the displacement of the thoracic verts and the missing bones
