Unit 10839
Category: skeleton dug in 2004
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: SHEEP!!,skeleton
Data Category Information: none
Discussion: This unit consists of a complete sheep skeleton; located next to skeleton 10840 within burial feature 1702. It was lying on top of a brown interface with phytoliths that curves upwards to the south and covers skeleton 10840. This suggests that 10840 was put in earlier.
Skeleton 10839 is located at the bottom of feature 1702. The sheep has an odd burial position with the hind legs coming up at an angle and the front legs coming up vertically; the body on its back; and the head twisted to the north.
It has been suggested that the front legs were held up while feature 1702 was infilled [NR]. The front legs were earlier removed as cluster 10828; but are now recognized as part of 10839.
X and Y of Targets: Target A - X: 911.5; Target A - Y: 981.5; Target B - X: 913; Target B - Y: 981.5; Target C - X: 913; Target C - Y: 981; Target D - X: 0; Target D - Y: 0
Body: lying on left side; pelvis tipped slightly back; right shoulder slightly forward.
Head: bent back against back; head bent back lying partly on left side/ mandibles in articulation and uppermost
Right Arm: humerus bent slightly up and out from body; rest of leg straight up almost right angle to the body
Left Arm: humerus under body; rest of leg straight up together with right
Right Leg: stretched out straight at an angle going up to foot
Left Leg: femur bent; rest of leg strecthed out straight; paralel to right
Other comments: Odd position with body on back and legs situated back and straight up. Not a natural way to lie; perhaps arranged so as not to fall onto the human body adjacent to the south. Some toes ans sesamoids have tumbled down showing there was some space as it decomposed; but otherwise perfectly articulated and undisturbed. A [textile-questionmark] covering on the human body extends under the sheep. Infantile; maybe female.
