Unit 1349
Category: layer dug in 1996
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: fill of hollow
Data Category Information: Location: feature; Description: basin; Deposition: homogeneous; Basal Spit: basal deposit
Discussion: Fill of oval hollow in floor -very similar to layer above and only separated for sampling reasons; the feature itself could be a hearth. The floor is certainly fired red near the centre and in places along its lip though this may simply be where a destruction fire was started, the feature itself originally being perhaps a food preparation area with the central flat stone as a grinder. Therefore linked to the lentil bin to the south. Note the feature is skew with respect to the bin but aligned with the relief on the south wall. Dry Sieve Information: Unknown if any dry sieve but probably not
Execution: Trowel
Condition: Dry
Consistency: Slightly weak
Colour: 2.5 YR 3/4 dark reddish brown; 5/8 red
Texture: Sandy silt loam
Bedding: Massive
Inclusions: Charcoal 10-15% up to 4 cm; stones 5-10% up to 20 cm; fragments of mudbrick 5% up to 8 cm
Post-depositional Features:
Basal Boundary: Prominent, sharp <2mm, smooth, slightly rounded but flat in the centre

Unit description: Consists of 1 antler tine, unburnt, rather crumbly. Sample 2 >4mm flotation 100% sorted, recorded completely. Smallish sample, mostly consisting of crumbles of burnt sheep/goat horn core. Otherwise, little bits of mostly sheep-size scrap, much of it burnt at low temperatures. Tiny burnt freshwater snail. A little digested. Weathering somewhat variable, but mostly well-preserved; one piece looks water worn. No coherence. Antler perhaps placed; rest looks like fill, or maybe low traffic floor.
