Unit 15177
Category: Layer dug in 2010
Area: Trench 5
Interpretive Categories: room fill
Data Category Information: none
Dimensions: 1,48m x 1,32m x 0,25m
Discussion: This unit consists of room fill in Space 450, the area between buttresses F.5053/5054, 5052, 5057 and 3326, and Space 452 between F.3326, 3329, 5052. Like the higgher U.15158, this layer is characterised by construction debris in the west (plaster lumps, mortar etc). By contrast, the eastern side contained less construction deposit but a larger number of x-finds, embedded in dark soil and mudbrick. Most finds were recovered from a strip running SN in front of buttress F.3326. Clusters x 11, x18 and x 21 were found almost under the walls of the buttresses. This makes sense as the bottom 15cm of the layer appear to be different in section, and the buttresses may belong to a phase later than the vessels in the clusters. The mudbricks in the E seem to respect the lines of the buttresses, hence forming a later phase, too. In sum, this space (450) clearly relates to the similar deposits in adjacent spaces (341, 340 with construction debris), 449 with clay balls and pottery (15177.x7, x14, x22), as a transitional area. However, the stratigraphic connections remain to be defined in U.15340.
Notes on x-finds: x18 in the NE corner at first appeared to be embedded in a niche (15183). Later units have revealed a ground stone being unclear in the mudbricks in that corner (15340.x1). The almost complete vessel and the ground stone may be related. X18 consisted of a pot cluster with associated yellow deposits (s3) stuck to the bottom of the vessel. It also had several clay balls (x7, x14, x22). This combination of artefacts suggests a cooking deposit, which must be understood in relation ot the numerous animal bones, pottery and clay balls deposits in the adjacent space 449 (15160, 15180). If Space 449 was the storage area for raw materials (antler, unfired clay balls etc) then these materials were brought out and used in 450 - the worked bone, baked clay balls et. Perhaps the route of these materials can be traced in the other spaces - 446's cluster and deposits (15193, 15194)? Hopefully this spectaculation will be informed by elaborating the stratigraphy in the E corner of 450 and 452.

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
X Finds Material: nothing recorded
Finds Material Stored: nothing recorded
