Unit 1663
Category: layer dug in 1997
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: floors + other
Data Category Information: Location: building; Description: general; Material: mixed; Deposition: composite (floor/bedding/plaster/packing/occupation)
Description: Floor remnants left by Mellaart, by E wall
(note on sheet: 're-do')
Discussion: This is an arbitrary layer in so far as it was taken off in one, & also because we previously tried to take off Mellaart's remnant floors but they were complex than expected & Jessica had to give up. It consists really of the lowest clear floor which has surface (1640) plus anything below it which overlay a speckled deposit.
However, a good clean of the area has now shown an apparently fallen wall plaster or else steeply sloping floor 1 inch thick at a 40 degree angle down towards the E wall, & it is possible some of 1663 belongs to that. Also, at S end this is remains of a bench over a wall which accounts for its raised base - made of dense clay & plaster
