Discussion: After the decision to stop u. 16973 at the ash layer, we included the latter into the new unit - 16980. The ash layer was not uniform, but it was found in the fill and in the W, N, and S walls. Immediately below (and withing) this ash layer there was a large cluster of various finds which continued but diminished in density all the way to the floor (the bottom of this unit). The ash layer was more persistent in the W wall and continued underneath the large potsherd (turned upside down). The largest lens of ash was found in the center of the unit. The cluster of the finds sloped down gradually from the SW corner due to a number of materials other than soil that increased the density and compactness of the underlying cluster base. The most important observation that came out of the excavation of this unit is that below the ash layer, artifacts are found within the supposed walls of the building 98. This indicates that there is probably a disjuncture between the walls and the floor, which will be verified after we remove the walls and the buttresses.

There is a phytolith sample from this unit S3 from an ashy deposit around pottery (PLR)
