Category: Layer    dug in 2008

Area: North

Site Sketch: Click here to open in a new window

Interpretive Categories: occupation debris

Data Category Information: Location: building; Description: general; Material: occupation; Deposition: composite (floors/bedding/plaster/packing/occupation)

Dimensions: irregular c.1.2m n-s x 0.6m x 0.12 - 0.2m depth

Discussion: initially this unit was interpreted as a skim of make up over construction levelling horizon, (similar sequence to (17906) to the south) but upon excavation was more like occupation material. There were no traceable lenses except at the edge of the deposit, fairly homogenous, soft and friable with few small - medium sized fragments of brick, mortar and plaster. Overlay plaster ridge which seemed to be a division of some kind. Similar deposit continued to the north ((17910) whilst further to south was a construction type infill of small fragments rubble debris (17911).

This layer contained lots small obsidian.

Seems to be accumulation of occupation debris in fine lenses (though only visible on edge of deposit and untraceable otherwise), so primary deposition of occupation but diffuse nature suggests high traffic? Accumulation over redundant plaster basin (where did it move to, can we phase this with reappearnce of plaster basin elsewhere?), but prior to overlying sequence, appears that this area must have been truncated/scoured on an even horizon indicated by complete truncation of these deposits to the south where it may have been on a slightly higher plane. (17905) also appeared to lay in a slight sunken plane, unless the sinking was due to settling/subsidence as material decayed and settled?

Recognition: slightly more compact than surroundd with visible lenses of floor type deposits along edges

Consistency: soft, friable

Colour: mid-dark mottled brown with oragnge brown patches

Texture: soft and silty

Bedding: diffuse, faint lenses

Inclusions: lots of small obsidian frags, small flecks charcoal and salts, mod phytoliths especially at interface of lenses

Post-depositional Features: lots animal burrows

Basal Boundary: diffuse, and unclear. Changed number as horizon of underlying plaster ridge appeared

Finds Room Information:

All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.

X Finds Material: nothing recorded
