Area: Trench 5
Interpretive Categories: raised platform / workbench, wall collapse
Data Category Information: none
Discussion: The mudbrick structure was recognized last year but eroded heavily before re-exposure this season. The upper surface was cut to a flat arbitrary level in the previous year. Possibly demolishing a plaster surface and reinforcing the structure's symmetry.
The structure was initially identified as a piece of collapsed wall. However, it showed no breakages that would be expected from a collapse. Furthermore the central position and alignment of the structure suggest that it was built or placed on the spot.
The most telling evidence is the large groundstone slab that was lodged ca.7cm deep in the southern corner of the mudbrick structure. There are no breakages or cuts that would indicate that the slab was forced into the structure. More likely the structure was built to incorporate the slab, perhaps to form a workbench. This is interesting as it suggests that the room was used for grain processing or similar activities. This is unexpected as the mudbrick-slab constellation is situated within and on top of fill rather than a distinct floor surface.
See unit sheet 31210 for more details on the stone slab.
