Description: the fill or substruction under the floor 16977 (U31143) in the b.98

Discussion: GWN:

The unit 18377 is in the same area where the artificial quadrangular network of units (31102, 31103,31104,...) was disposed in order of the floor (16977) to be removed and thoroughly understood. The latest unit determined the levels below the floors i.e. the fill or substruction for the leveling of the upper floors. The soil was loose without specific structures within, except the abundance of pottery, bones, clay balls, figurine, pot stand and bone tool.

CLC:

This unit was initially recognized in a 2012 sondage in sp.449 in B.98. Excavations in 2013 confirmed this fill over a wide area in B.98 under the floors. After removal of floor 31143, it was clear that ca. 1cm of this fill directly below the floor is quite compact and was initially thought to be another trampled surface. However, it is more likely, that this compactness results from interaction between the fill and flooor above. Possibilities include pressure from rampling on the floor above, or even a drying + hardening caused by desication by the calcareas floor. Moreover finds in this fill found directly under the floor were collected seperately, as they are clearly very close stratigraphically to the floor, in some cases leaving impressions in the floor above, where it was laid on top of them. The surface of this layer also sometimes demonstrates a reddish hue. The fact that these 1-2 compact centimeters on top do not easily seperate from the rest of the fill below stenghten the assumption that it is not a seperate layer, despite the compact/soft consistency differences.

Finds Room Information:

All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
