Unit 19568
Category: Layer dug in 2012
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: Burial fill
Data Category Information: Location: cut; Description: burial; Deposition: homogeneous
Discussion: This fill, which came below the false brick bottom (U. 20499) was soft, dark brown and similar in consistancy to the fill above the bricks (U. 20480). The fill surrounds the skeleton (U. 19569) and contains many well preserved burial items due to the depth of the grave. These goods include several ceramic vessels, bone needles and pins, a glass vessel and many well-preserved coffin nails. The fill had a kind of U-shape to it as the brick layer above had collapsed in the center. The skeleton within the fill was extremely well preserved and articulated with a few anomalies in the fill such as tarsal bones in the fill near the ribs and the atlas vertebrae above the skull. One other thing of note was a thin, flat piece of seemingly square charcoal (wooden) that was directly over the front of the skull. There was no trace of burning on the bones or in the fill, however.
