Discussion: Unit 1969 is a room (?) in the NE corner of house 1
Spit 1 cleaning of the dry white clay layer that remained from the 1996 season. This was mostly collapsed plaster.
Spit 2 - of the 5 cm layer under the floor packing with white clay i.e. plaster inclusions on the E side and burned clay deposits on the W side of the unit. A fragment of worked bone (a ring?)
Spit 3 - a displaced human bone, a fragment of painted plaster, a fragment of clay ball. Still mixed up deposits of underfloor packing.
I was digging mainly through packing that seemed to have been one depositional event. Random bits of bone (very few), a few of pottery and baked clay, but most interestingly a noticeable amount of natural clay lumps especially towards the bottom (obviously not collected) so worth mentioning. Lots of root disturbance & salts brought down by roots.
Execution: trowel
Condition: hot & windy under tent
Consistency: moderately firm
Colour: 10YR 5/2 greyish-brown
Texture: sitly clay loam
Bedding: massive
Inclusions: brown silty clay lumps, low variability, slightly moist <4cm, 2-5% 10YR 4/3, <2% bone, phytoliths <2%
Post-depositional Features: lost of salts (5010%), roots (2-5%), 2 possible animal burrows
