Unit 1975

Category: layer    dug in 1997

Area: North

Interpretive Categories: fill

Data Category Information: Location: cut; Description: burial; Deposition: homogeneous

Dimensions: 0.35 m wide x 0.40m long x 0.15 m thick, all max.

Discussion: This small block of deposit was heavily truncated to the South and East, but probably represents a small area of early surviving grave fill. Contained several disarticulated human bone fragments, burnt bone (animal?) and an obsidian flake.
This deposit appeared to have been partially derived from the midden material the grave cut [1977] truncated.
It seems likely that this deposit represents a single depositional episode, due to its lack of internal structure and poor sorting. This probably relates to an inhumation episode therefore.

Execution: trowel & hand shovel

Condition: warm, dry

Consistency: weak to firm (variable)

Colour: 10YR 3/2 V, dark greyish brown when wet, drying to 10YR 4/2

Texture: silty sand (20:80 approx)

Bedding: fairly massive, no internal lenses etc visible

Inclusions: occasional scattered charcoal flecks (<5mm <2%), moderate amounts of scattered crushed mortar / plaster (<5%)

Post-depositional Features: truncated to south by a previous grave cut, some bioturbation from fine rootlets

Basal Boundary: lower interface = relatively flat, and reasonably distinct (5-10mm). Rear interface with midden material = less clear, (10-20mm)
