Unit 20046
Category: Layer dug in 2014
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: Ashy floors of hearth
Data Category Information: Location: feature; Description: hearth; Material: dark grey clay; Deposition: multiple; Basal Spit: unpainted
Description: Unit is a loose heavily burned layer of packed floors to hearth F 3436, located under more compact floor layer 20045.
Discussion: Unit was recognized due to change in color and consistency of soil, may represent a more heavily burned floor of the hearth or less likely a layer of ash and burned material floor packing, resulting from extensive use of the hearth over a period of time. It was also defined by the stratography of the hearth visible in the southern edge/profile. Overall the hearth feature appears to be constructed as alternating layers of floors and more compact superstructure layers. This layer sits on friable laminated surfaces u. 20048 around the edges of the feature, and loose degraded surfaces u. 20050 in the center of the hearth.
