Unit 20077
Category: Layer dug in 2014
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: Hearth Superstructure
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: feature; Description: hearth; Material: pise-like; Deposition: homogeneous
Description: Layer is a friable superstructure under U. 20075. It appears to extend around the hearth in the footprint of U. 20075 except for the edge where it is eroded away and the base of a smaller hearth is present.
Discussion: This unit was recognized first in the profile of the hearth/the area where it was dug out and cleaned out on the inner sides in antiquity. This layer appears to be sitting on the N edge on top of a plaster floor connecting with the main sunken floor. There is a plaster line under u.20077 running N-S along the W edge that may connect with the floor on the N edge. On the E. edge of F. 3436, it appears U. 20077 has been eroded away or dug out in antiquity perhaps to alter the size of the hearth or to preserve the plaster lipping of the sunken floor located to the E. of F 3436 (not the main sunken floor to the N). This unit seems to be the last superstructure phase of a new hearth feature, F 7402 that comes directly before F. 3436.
