Unit 20078
Category: Layer dug in 2014
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: Plaster Molding to edge of Hearth
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: feature; Description: hearth; Material: plaster; Deposition: heterogeneous; Basal Spit: unpainted
Description: Unit is a layered (approximately 2 layers) plaster molding to feature 7402. It appears to be eroded away in the SW corner, and either eroded, dug out, or not built on the E edge. On the W and S edges, the plaster lips up about 3 cm onto the surrounding dirty floors.
Discussion: This layer was initially recognized under the first superstructure layer of hearth F 3436 (U. 20075) as a line of plaster (the top of the lip) then as U. 20077 was removed the full extent of the plaster was revealed. The superstructure for the mini-hearth within F.7402 (U. 20086) lips onto the platser. Therefore U. 20078 is associated with the phase of the hearth before U. 20086 was added. The lip extending from the S to W edge is 1-3 cm high (higher than on the W edge where it lips onto the dirty floor patch with the fire spot). There appears to be two very thin plaster and makeup layers included in this unit. Thus the unit was remodeled and maintained multiple times. This unit probably serves to decoratively frame the hearth and it also mirrors the lipping of the plaster sunken basin-like floor that lips up onto the hearth superstructure below U. 20078 on the E edge of the hearth where U. 20078 doesn't continue (this deisgn may be intentional). The layers of plaster are extremely thin on the S. edge maybe because with the fire spot nearby, the plaster on the W edge needed to be thicker.
