Unit 20622
Category: Layer dug in 2013
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: Dump element in filling of B.102
Data Category Information: Location: building; Deposition: homogeneous
Discussion: This unit was an ashy layer of clay and silt, situated between F3688 and wall F.3655 (southern wall of B.102). It was first recognized when removing room fill U.20481. First I thought it was over or contemporary with the infant burial F3691, but when this skeleton was removed and documented it became evident that this unit was below that burial feature as part of it became recognized then. 20622 was excavated with trowel, and when it comes to X.3 (human cranial fragments) with a wooden thin stick. Beneath the layer came further room fill although more homogenous than the one over this unit; an earlier dump element (20911). 20622 contained some animal bones and three osteological specimen which have been X-finded: X1 horn core, X2 Homo cran. fragm. and X3 Animal (large herbivor) scapula.
This unit seems to be an element which should be grouped as a dump element in the room filling. It should be seen in connection with the burial, and associated with the closing acitivities of B102. This is the most probable interpretation perhaps, since it was so special and different from the rest of room fill layers.
Consistency: Soft and easy to free with trowel
Colour: Greyish brown with black spots (of ash)
