Unit 20864
Category: Layer dug in 2014
Area: South
Data Category Information: Location: building; Deposition: heterogeneous; Basal Spit: basal deposit
Discussion: This unit represents a compact layer of fill deposited in space 444 before its subsequent burning and abandonment. It is very sandy and clay-y, and had laid on top of it cluster u. 20863-- a collection of human and faunal bone. This layer, by contrast, was extremely clean (relatively devoid of finds) until the basal boundary where X1 was located. The layer was in some ways difficult to differentiate from the threshold to the south, and may represent packing which travels beneath the threshold bricks. The decision to continue until this interface was made on the basis of the heterogeneity of the fill vs. the homogeneity of the bricks.
Addition 2015:
Leftovers of the unit adjecent to the wall F3514 were excavated in 2015 together with a bone that was put together with the bone cluster U20863.
Consistency: Compact to friable-- looser near where fire began in u. 20856
Colour: Brown-reddish to grayish
Texture: Sandy clay loam
Bedding: Compound
Inclusions: Charcoal, bone fragments
Post-depositional Features: Burning, animal burrows, truncation by Mellaart
Basal Boundary: Finished when we came upon finds and a very damaged layer of plaster preserved only in patches to the south-- though this may have been arbitrary (see discussion)

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
