Unit 21140
Category: Layer dug in 2014
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: Infill of B. 113
Data Category Information: Location: building; Deposition: homogeneous
Discussion: U21140 The infill of the foundations of the B113 was arbitrarily defined and partially excavated in 2014. The layer seemed rather homogenous however due to its size and thickness some variations were observed. Namely bright yellow pure clay lenses in the N part of the space (visible in section of B113) and big chunks of plastered surfaces and bricks. Also some activities were observed; black lenses (fire spots) one of which was continuing in between the bricks of foundation wall F7613 and then into the in between wall infill (U21102) between this wall and F3678. The infill was very similar to material used as mortar in all foundation walls of the building and was also observed underneath those walls. The cut (U22134) made in previous midden like layers for this infill was observed in section and proved to be really hard to follow probably because it was backfilled with the removed material (which would explain the abundance of finds and inclusions).
The working hypothesis is that, for some reason, older, open area was cut to make space for massive foundations of B113. Then the foundations were erected in steps; 1 or 2 courses of bricks were laid following the slope of the cut and the whole space was backfilled with previously removed materials in a way that the backfill was also covering the bricks acting as mortar and then the whole process was repeated. Some packing clay layers were added in N part of the foundation and some activities may have happened (the firespots) while the construction was erected.

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
X Finds Material: nothing recorded
Finds Material Stored: nothing recorded
