Unit 21165

Category: Layer    dug in 2014

Area: North

Interpretive Categories: Inbetween wall infill

Data Category Information: Location: between walls; Deposition: heterogeneous

Discussion: U21165 was recognized as infill in between the wall F7341 and the wall standing S of it. In W part its borders were well defined as it was in between the walls, however, after approximately 1,2 m the S wall turns S and the F (northern wall of building 49) becomes S border of this Unit which is much wider (1m) in that part filling the space between walls F7341, F3678 and F1655. The bottom of the unit was therefore quite diffuse and was defined by the top of another wall found under it, together with the infill in between that wall and the S wall.
The unit was quite heterogeneous as it contained lots of constructional debris, especially in its E part (counting big parts of oven floors) where ashy spots were found. The bottom was much more homogenous and mortar like and seems to be continuing also in between the S wall and new found wall, and was excavated as such. However the basal boundry, since it was diffuse and in fact over than bottom level of walls constituting its N border, might be treated as arbitrary. It was dark gray and contained lots of small inclusions- was very similar (same as?) one of the layers of infill of Building 113 (U19567). In its SW Corner ashy lense/layer sloping towards the W was found in between clayish lenses. The unit 19590 excavated in 2012 lying on top of u.21165 was probably same as this unit. The antler found in its E part which part was found sticking in U19590 confirms this hypothesis.
