Unit 21194
Category: Layer dug in 2014
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: Infill layer of B.129
Data Category Information: Location: building; Deposition: heterogeneous
Description: Layer 21194 is quite heterogeneous in colour and consistency, ranging from dark brown/black, softer and rich in rock fragments towards the southern end to dark grey, compact silt in the central area of the layer. The majority of the layer is composed of firm, light grey silt.
Discussion: U.21194 is one of the infill layers between B.129 (later phase) and B.131 (earlier phase). Unlike U.21193 and 21195 the soil is unburnt. Lying above U.21193, U.21194 is later than the burnt infill layer (U.21193).
The depht of U.21194 is very variable, ranging from few centimeters in the central area to a maximum depht of around 60 cm close to the walls. For this reason, we interpreted this layer as a preparation layer set up in order to stabilize the walls of later building 129.
The infill itself is quite heterogeneous, due probably to the different provenance of the soil used (see description).
In the S-W corner of the layer we found a high concentration of clay balls (4-5) and, above all, beads (10-12). In the same area X1 was found: it is a black, cave worked bone, cylindrical in shape, perhaps incised.

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
