Unit 21867
Category: Layer dug in 2016
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: oven floor
Data Category Information: Location: feature; Description: oven; Material: baked
Description: Base and make up for an oven
Discussion: 21867 refers to the earlier floor until now exposed of oven F579, which is located in the north-eastern corner of sp. 170.
The floor, which is covered by an overlying floor (21865) and is cut by a pit (21870: cut; 21866 infill) filled with fragmented clay balls and stones has not been excavated yet, due to the sudden end of this year campaign. Its surface shows clear signs of burning activity. The neat structural distinction between the frontal part of the oven, where the pit with the clay balls+stones is located, and the inner part, wich is a flat surface, might be explained by the contemporary use of different cooking techniques, maybe related to the preparation of specific types of food. Further analyses by the lab. people will surely help to better understand this distinction.
Unit exposed in 2016 and excavate in 2017, that refers the earlier floor exposed of oven F579, we remove with the same unite the base and the make-up.
The base had clear signs of burn activity, was very thin less than 1 cm and had and orange-green color. Below that, we documented the make-up, that was brown orange, pretty compact and between 0.3 and 0.5 m thick. Below that we exposed the remains of the platform, and also a kind of foundation for the oven superstructure (U21881) (CB- 07/05/2017)
