Unit 2202
Category: layer dug in 1997
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: House fill
Data Category Information: none
Discussion: The north edge of this unit was not excavated because of the presence of the layer of plaster on the north wall of space 86. The bottom of this unit seems to be slightly firmer than the layer that was just removed, but probably doesn't correspond to a floor. Throughout the unit, crumbly concentrations of plaster were found (2-5 cm diam). Most were found in the SW part of this unit. Bits of broken bone throughout and a few fragments of mud brick.
In cleaning the area around the small N-S wall in the NW of this unit, an iron nail was found that is probably associated with the post-Neolithic burial (2236/2237) that cut through this unit.
The northern half of this unit is considerably harder and more brick-like than the south and was left higher for that reason in case it is part of some kind of bench (some argument about such an interpretation).

At the bottom of units 2259 and 2204 it was decided to take off a part of the control profile in this area in order to uncover the area of collapsed wall plaster and possible floor of platforms. This layer will be excavated in a spit of 10 cm. thicknes. The previous description of this unit applies here as well-it mainly consists of mixed brick and ashy layers.

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.

Unit description: Medium size unit coming from the space 86 fill, close below Byzantine burials. Consisting of roughly equal amounts of sheep-size and large mammal bone. Scraps 10 % burnt (black carbonised and grey calcined), some fragments weathered. iD's - One Bos distal end of humerus (recent break, could not be glued completely), other fragments coming from Ovis/Capra and small carnivore. Quite fragmented, surface condition poor, no doubt because of the proximity to the ground surface. All body parts represented, only slightly tilted to long bones. Little coherence. Looks like fill or mixed deposits, mostly of post-consumption origin. Sample 1 >4mm flotation sample 100% sorted; only diagnostics recorded, rest as flot frags. Moderate size sample, generally similar to dry sieved but with more smaller pieces. Still relatively large bits, not tiny floor-type scraps, though. One microfauna specimen pulled, no fish Last number = 107Figurine Records: No GroundStone Records: No Heavy Residue Records: No Microfaunal Records: No
